Mark Rylance let Hamlet’s madness rip across the stage. In Ron Daniels’s 1989 production, derangement was stripped of any stage decorativeness. Rylance, wearing striped, shit-stained pyjamas, was wild. He mooned, he jeered, he spat in Ophelia’s face. He exercised his exceptional gift of seeming entirely rapt in his own mental universe and yet speaking directly to the audience, as if he were alighting on particular individuals. When the production was performed in Broadmoor, one of his inmate spectators approached him afterwards: “You were really mad – take it from me, I should know. I’m a loony.”

Rylance as one of the 5 Best Hamlets…. and Broadway Tickets now on sale for La Bête

Tickets are now on sale for the riotous comedy La Bête starring Tony winner David Hyde Pierce, Tony winner Mark Rylance and Joanna Lumley. Performances begin September 23 ahead of an October 14 opening at the Music Box Theatre. Tony winner Matthew Warchus directs.

Set in 17th century France, the Moliere-inspired La Bête is a farce written in iambic pentameter that tells of a government-sponsored theater troupe that is shaken up when the group’s patron insists that a buffoonish street performer joins the company. The show is currently playing a pre-Broadway engagement in London at the West End’s Comedy Theatre.

Laughs are sure to be aplenty in this hilarious, star-filled comedy. Be sure to get your tickets today!

Mark Rylance listed as one of the “most memorable Hamlets”

Today, I saw an article in the New York Times about British actor, Ben Whishaw, which mentioned Mark Rylance.

But it was a stage role that brought most acclaim. In Trevor Nunn’s 2004 production of “Hamlet,” at the Old Vic in London, Mr. Whishaw, then 23 and six months out of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, played the title character as an overprivileged brat.

Critics were jubilant. Charles Spencer, writing in The Daily Telegraph, said that Mr. Whishaw “earned his place in such distinguished company” as Gielgud and Olivier. Ben Brantley of The New York Times has listed Mr. Whishaw among his most memorable Hamlets, alongside Mark Rylance and Simon Russell Beale.

Rylance can be seen onstage in JERUSALEM currently playing at Apollo Theatre. He had just won the Critic Circle Theatre Awards for Best Actor for JERUSALEM. I also spotted a cool article from NYT about Mark Rylance’s stepdaughter, Juliet Rylance, who is also an accomplished theatre actress and currently starring opposite her husband, Christian Camargo, (also a stage actor) in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, in New York City (directed by Sam Mendes).

Mark Rylance as Hamlet in Hamlet (RSC, 1989)


Mark Rylance as Hamlet in HAMLET (Royal Shakespeare Company, 1989). Rylance’s performance as Hamlet was hailed as one of the greatest stage performances critics had ever seen. Some people would argue it was HAMLET that launched Rylance as the greatest, finest classical actor of our time.

One theatre critic attested how powerful Rylance’s potrayal of Hamlet was, that it launched him as the most respected thespian of our time:

…..This was the version in which Rylance, famously clad in filthy striped pyjamas during the ‘antic disposition’ scenes, took the role of the Prince by what you’d have to call brainstorm. After the actor had taken his bows, one of the inmates rushed up to him and said, in hats- off tones, ‘You were really mad – take it from me, I should know, I’m a loony.’

…What amazed many of us, though, was the way this bonkers, alternative comedian of a Prince also managed – thanks to Rylance’s haunted sweetness of countenance and that intense but wary rapport he can build up with an audience – to project Hamlet’s infinite solitariness and injured spirituality better than any contender within memory.

The idea that, in Rylance, we have the finest actor of his generation began to take shape around that time. Next week, in a production that begins at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and then transfers to the Donmar in London, the 34- year-old veteran takes on a new challenge. Swapping parts on different nights with the American actor Michael Rudko, Rylance will get to play both the brothers (the dapper suburban screenwriter and the lumbering, slovenly drifter) who wind up in hapless role-reversal in Sam Shepard’s True West. As one reviewer described Rylance’s portrayal of Hamlet: “As to the Prince himself, there was method acting in his madness with Mark Rylance pushing his characterization of the vengeful Hamlet to the full.” -Leamington Morning News (29/04/89)

Another review on Rylance: “He is an angry young man with a grudge, not a prince. In his character he is interesting but unsympathetic… He will joke about anything he can.” – B.A. Young, The Financial Times


Hamlet wore pajamas through-out the whole play, which presented Hamlet in a very different light for the audience to perceive.
